Megan's swimming progression

Last week during Megan's swimming lesson we had more than one scare. Her class took off to the "lazy river". Usually they are in the section of the pool that has the floating lane lines. Megan can always grab one of them if she starts to flounder at all. In the lazy river she is "over her head" in more ways than one. Her class is for ages 5-12, and she is by far the shortest. The other children in her class can stand in that section of the pool (I think it is 3 1/2' deep) She had all three parents nearby, but we were all still a little nervous.

This week she had some type of breakthrough. She started using breaststroke instead of the crawl. With the crawl, she kept popping her head straight up instead of breathing to the side. That takes a lot of energy, and she would lose all her momentum and start to sink. But with the breaststroke she can pop her head straight up and keep going. I always liked breaststroke; it was my specialty in high school. This week when they headed into the river it was a lot less scary.

Go Megan!
