Hurricane season did not miss Cincinnati this year. Sunday, during the Bengals game (the awful, horrific, humiliating Bengals game), we were hit with winds up to 70 mph. Shingles flew. Trees were uprooted and ruined cars. Our little playhouse flew across the yard, and our sandbox lost about 80% of its sand (we were lucky: that was the only "damage" we had) And power lines were damaged. Over 90% of the city was affected. For a few, power returned by Sunday evening. But most were still out by Monday morning. Luckily temperatures were falling and no one had to worry about sweating in their houses.
Kids came out and played outside instead of sitting in front of the TV or computer. No one fussed over dinner - bread and peanut butter worked just fine. David, Cameron and I went to bed when it got dark at 8p, cuddled together until Cam fell asleep. When we still didn't have power in the morning, we started making plans for our food. My office had power, so off I went. Cam's daycare had power, so off he went. Monday evening - still no power. But the community center (where the kids have swim lessons) was up and running, so we went to swimming, shampoo in hand. A hot shower felt great to all of us, even Cam.
Megan was with her dad, who had power restored Sunday evening. Her school was cancelled Monday, and Eric's work had no power, so they had an extra day to hang out.
At 5a Tuesday morning, our VCR whirred and our bedroom fan started up. "The power's on!" I told David. Wow... 38 hours without power, who would have thought we could survive? Mamie's coming up on 48 hours, and still no juice.
It was a fun adventure, but I'm glad it didn't happen next week! (PREMIERES!)
